
Peter Bart joined Variety in 1989. As vice president and editor-in-chief, he presides over the editorial content of Daily Variety (both LA and Gotham editions), Weekly Variety and Variety.com.
He also hosts the weekly AMC television program, Shootout, with Peter Guber. In its fifth season, Shootout is the network’s most prestigious and longest running non-scripted series. Airing on Sunday mornings, the series is not only a news staple of the Hollywood community, but also reaches 53 countries overseas.
Bart has written eight books – most recently Boffo! How I Learned to Love the Blockbuster and Fear the Bomb. He also served as executive producer of Boffo!, the documentary film produced by HBO.
Prior to Variety, Bart held a number of key studio jobs. During his eight year tenure with Paramount he played a pivotal role in developing and supervising such landmark motion pictures as The Godfather, Harold and Maude, True Grit, Rosemary’s Baby and many more.
After Paramount, Bart served as president of Lorimar Films, which produced a number of highly successful features including, Being There and The Postman Always Rings Twice. Bart also served as senior vice president of MGM/UA.
Bart was educated at Swarthmore College and the London School of Economics. He spent fifteen years as a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times before entering the motion picture industry.
